Designing a Profitable Feed Processing Line

Feed ProcessingFarm Machinery

How to match grinding, mixing, pelleting and bagging capacity to your farm and market plan.

Define Output Before Buying Equipment

A feed line is a chain: grinding, mixing, pelleting, cooling and bagging. Every stage must handle the target hourly output, otherwise the weakest link caps the whole line. Decide whether you feed only your own flock or also sell feed, because that changes the required capacity and the level of automation.

Grinding: Match Screen and Power to the Material

The hammer mill or disc mill must match your main raw materials — maize, wheat, cassava, rice by-products. Screen size controls particle size, which affects mixing quality and pellet durability. For mixed raw materials, choose a machine with adjustable screens and enough power to avoid frequent blockages.

Mixing: Consistency Is the Product

Feed quality is measured by uniformity. A vertical mixer is practical for medium farms; ribbon mixers suit larger, continuous lines. Check mixing time in the manual and stick to it — over-mixing wastes energy and can separate light ingredients. Add liquid ingredients only with a mixer designed for it.

Pelleting and Cooling

Pellets reduce waste, improve digestibility and make feed easier to store and transport. The pellet mill must be matched to the die size for your target species — poultry, pig or fish. Hot pellets must be cooled and dried before bagging, otherwise moisture causes mould in storage.

  • Grinding → mixing → pelleting → cooling → bagging, with matched capacity
  • Die size and conditioner time depend on the target species
  • Cooling before bagging prevents mould and extends shelf life

Layout, Labor and Quality Control

Keep the flow linear: intake, grinding, mixing, pelleting, bagging, storage. A clean layout reduces manual carrying and makes daily cleaning possible. Keep samples of each batch, record formulation changes, and calibrate the scales regularly — in feed production, consistency is what customers pay for.
